Swiss Bread Men (Grittibänz)

Charming little bread men that are commonly made to celebrate St. Nicholas Day on 6th December, in the German speaking part of Switzerland.

Ingredients
  • 7 g yeast (about 1½ teaspoon)
  • 500 g flour (about 3 cups)
  • 1½ teaspoon salt
  • 70 g sugar (about ½ cup)
  • 70 g butter (about ½ cup), softened
  • 250ml milk (about 1 cup)
  • 1 egg
  • Lemon zest (optional)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Almonds, raisins etc. (for decorating)

Cinnamon Biscuits

Delightful little (or not so little) cinnamon biscuits! Easy to make and easy to eat- especially at Christmas when star-shaped versions are all the range!

Ingredients (Biscuit)
  • 3 tablespoons plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar (light or brown)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar (in the video I said 3 cups - THAT IS WRONG! It is ¾ of a cup!!)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence (or if you’re like me and don’t have any, add something like nutmeg/cloves)
  • ½ cup brown sugar (light or brown)
  • Zest of 1 lemon
Ingredients (Topping)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
