Swiss Bread Men (Grittibänz)
Charming little bread men that are commonly made to celebrate St. Nicholas Day on 6th December, in the German speaking part of Switzerland.
Ingredients
- 7 g yeast (about 1½ teaspoon)
- 500 g flour (about 3 cups)
- 1½ teaspoon salt
- 70 g sugar (about ½ cup)
- 70 g butter (about ½ cup), softened
- 250ml milk (about 1 cup)
- 1 egg
- Lemon zest (optional)
- 1 egg yolk
- Almonds, raisins etc. (for decorating)

Cinnamon Biscuits
Delightful little (or not so little) cinnamon biscuits! Easy to make and easy to eat- especially at Christmas when star-shaped versions are all the range!
Ingredients (Biscuit)
- 3 tablespoons plain flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- ½ cup brown sugar (light or brown)
- ¾ cup granulated sugar (in the video I said 3 cups - THAT IS WRONG! It is ¾ of a cup!!)
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence (or if you’re like me and don’t have any, add something like nutmeg/cloves)
- ½ cup brown sugar (light or brown)
- Zest of 1 lemon
Ingredients (Topping)
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons milk
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
