York has a long history, with occupation of York being traced back up to 8000BC. York as a settlement was founded in AD71 as Eboracum by the Roman Army, with the name meaning "Place of the Yew trees" in Latin and was likely granted city, or "Colonia" status by the Emperor Severus during his stay between 207-211AD. The first Christian Roman emperor Constantine the Great was declared Emperor in York in 306AD. It was conquered by the Vikings in 866AD, and renamed Jorvik, likely meaning "Wild Boar Creek". York, along with most of Northern England, was decimated by William the Conquerer's "Harrying of the North", in which reportedly 150,000 died.

York prospered in the 12th century as a major trading centre, growing wealthy until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, of which many were located within York, caused a revolt known as the "Pilgrimage of Grace". York was royalist during the English Civil War and was beseiged during the summer of 1644, leading to the destruction of many medieval houses, but remained as a major cultural centre until the present, being voted European Tourist City of the year in 2007, and the "Best Place to live in Britain" in 2018.
